The world’s first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, was born in the United Kingdom on July 25, 1978. Therefore, July 25 is recognized as International IVF Day and also as Embryologist Day.
Louise’s mother suffered from blocked fallopian tubes and successfully became pregnant through IVF treatment provided by a team consisting of embryologist Jean Marian, obstetrician Steptoe, and physiologist Professor Edwards. Louise is now 47 years old and is the mother of two children.
Over the past 47 years, many countries and regions around the world have provided IVF treatment for people facing infertility. The application of IVF has also expanded from its early use for blocked fallopian tubes to many other areas, including male infertility, ovarian dysfunction, and chromosomal or genetic abnormalities in couples. It has also led to the development of egg freezing technology.
Professor Edwards, who developed this innovative medical technology, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2010 in recognition of his team’s great contribution to human reproduction.
